Following up on my recent brief post about marriage equality in the United States, it is exciting to see when campaigns for marriage equality make advances. This week, the Human Rights Campaign—an organization dedicated equality for LGBT Americans—officially launched its new public engagement campaign called “Americans for Marriage Equality”.

Although the campaign got underway in October of this year, the official launch occurred on November 28 with the support of several high-profile attendees. Hosted by the Calvin Klein Collection at its infamous Madison Avenue store, a number of celebrities and influential Americans showed up to demonstrate their support for the campaign.

The Americans campaign is seeking to build and support a national dialogue on marriage equality, drawing strength from the HRC’s successful “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign that ran during 2011. It views continued public dialogue and education as a key factor in changing public perception about marriage equality, noting that today 53% of the American public supports equal marriage rights. The campaign will draw from the support of noted athletes, film and music celebrities, and political and civil rights leaders to provide video testimonials about this important—and central—issue concerning the equal rights of LGBT Americans.
